Spending the time and money to get the knowledge and equipment would be putting you ahead of the game. Use this knowledge to teach others or if your services were needed you would be considered a celebrity.
And for self-defense, can you imagine the response you would get from a number of attackers or a threat which would be beyond your ability to protect yourself, if you faced them in some kind of hazmat suit with a tricked out Geiger counter which was making noises.
